April 2007 edition

Apologies for those who regularly check this site for monthly updates as the index page (this page) hasn't been updated for a year. Fortunately for back garden astronomers there are some nice views in the night sky during April, Saturn is very high in the sky and makes an interesting if sometimes challenging planet to view in small telescopes. The image above right was taken with a Philips web cam (ToUcam Pro) and a 10" diameter telescope and is the result of combining dozens of frames with the freeware program Registax.

A more traditional view is shown above right and shows M65 (lower right), M66 (lower left) and NGC 3628 (upper left). The shot was taken with an MX5C "one shot colour" CCD camera and Canon 300mm f4 camera lens, exposure approx 4 minutes. These galaxies are in the constellation of Leo and are high in the evening sky to the left of Saturn. The image below is from Sky Map Pro and shows the position of Leo and Saturn in the evening sky around 2230 hours local time in the UK.
